Ashtanga Vinyasa is a non-aggressive dynamic form of yoga. Precise sequences of postures are linked with the breath in a conscious wave-like flow of movement, cultivating internal heat, effortless deep breathing and a steady gaze, energy is transformed from solid to liquid to space, - balancing, aligning, centering and moving into stillness of body and mind.

   One of my main yoga teachers was teaching a thirteen hours yoga workshop recently that I attended with great delight. Insight and understanding naturally occurred from the depth of the practice.

  With permission from my yoga teacher Acharya Venkatesha and his wife Acharye Hema, I am introducing a new format of teaching to my remaining yoga classes. The foundation is still ashtanga yoga-based but the energy put towards the details on the different postures is different.

  From now on we will be working together, trying to understand the restrictions in the body, then working with the body and mind, to bring about a natural alignment of both by controlling the breath. I will spend time with each one of you looking at ways to improve your yoga practice, minimising the help of props, with very little adjustments or demonstrations from me as my role is to remove myself slowly from the process, so you have the space to do your own inner work.

  As we know by now, relationships are a two way street that need feedback from both sides, so feel free to express yourself.

The main reason for this new approach is that a constant practice over a long period of time is required in order to experience Savasana (the dead pose) in every single yoga posture – it will help people who practice yoga only once or twice a week and those who are going back slowly to their yoga due to injury or laziness to progress more speedily. The style and methods in the new yoga classes should be more inspiring, accessible and less intimidating when it comes to a routine at home or after a long day at work.

There is a deeper level of understanding of the changes I am making to our classes…

  • When do we actually practice our yoga with depth? When do we live our life deeply? When was the last time we felt at ease in a yoga posture? Understanding the meaning of life requires depth. Working deeply will bring about discipline which is the bridge between our formal practices and our daily ’busy-ness’.
Discipline stretches far beyond the mat. There is discipline in focusing on the breath, there is discipline in grabbing our wrists in sitting postures, discipline in keeping our gaze steady, discipline in standing and sitting tall, discipline in keeping our feet heavily grounded in back-bending poses, discipline in being on time, discipline in not-gossiping, discipline in smiling more often than not, discipline in trying again and again our best, discipline in being kind to ourselves, discipline in avoiding negative emotions creeping in by controlling the breath, discipline in learning to listen and discipline to be open to something new.
By being disciplined we are naturally reminded to pay attention to details - in those endless details we experience a correct method of moving and breathing effortlessly.

  • When the ritual of the practice is in place then we can integrate our understanding to every day living, our yoga doesn’t become a way out from our ordinariness but a way in deep down to the bottom of our old stories, old patterns of thinking, acting and talking.

Without integration there is no transformation and without transformation there is no death of the old and the knowledge that our inner and outer world is inextricably interdependent.
